Changes to NZIIA Membership

We are implementing some important changes to membership of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs from 2026.

The NZIIA national Board has agreed that every current member of NZIIA will receive an electronic version of the New Zealand International Review magazine via email as part of your subscription (unless you choose to opt out). We will no longer distribute a hard copy magazine as part of your NZIIA membership.

The reasons are that the costs of printing, packaging and postage continue to rise. The number of electronic subscribers has increased substantially; however, hard copy subscriptions are falling. The savings from going digital will be re-invested back into the magazine’s editorial and design quality, which will continue under the leadership of newly appointed editor Dr Mathew Doidge from 2026.

Members wanting to receive hard copies of the magazine will still be able to purchase these individually from the NZIIA website; however, this transaction will not relate to the NZIIA membership fee and will be at cost – at $35 per magazine, including printing, postage, packaging and GST.

This means that there will no longer be differentiated NZIIA membership fees for New Zealand International Review hard copy / electronic / no magazine. Instead, in setting fees for 2026, Branches will offer a reduced number of membership categories, as per below.

Invoices will be issued to existing NZIIA members on the below basis on 1 December. If you would like to change your membership category, please let us know in advance of this date.

We very much hope you remain a member of NZIIA into 2026, as we strive to foster expert discussion and understanding of international affairs as they relate to New Zealand.
