Join us for an address by Jin Liqun, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). President Jin will discuss AIIB’s growth, its climate and development priorities, and New Zealand’s role in the Bank’s evolution, followed by an audience Q and A. 

The event is organised by the Asia New Zealand Foundation in collaboration with the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs. Refreshments and event facilities are generously sponsored by Beca. 

Arrive from 4.30pm for a 5pm start.

About Jin Liqun

Jin is the inaugural President of AIIB. In 2020, he was elected for a second five-year term as President. He is also Chair of the Board of Directors. Before assuming his current positions, Jin was the Secretary-General of the Multilateral Interim Secretariat, the entity tasked with establishing AIIB.

Jin has a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors. Among many high-level roles, Jin has served as the Chairman of China International Capital Corporation Limited, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of China Investment Corporation, Chairman of the International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds, Vice President and then Ranking Vice President of the Asian Development Bank, and as Alternate Executive Director for China at the World Bank. Jin also spent nearly two decades at the Chinese Ministry of Finance, rising to become a Vice Minister.

President Jin holds a master’s degree in English Literature from the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages (now the Beijing Foreign Studies University) and was the Hubert Humphrey Fellow in the Economics Graduate Programme at Boston University. As noted in several media articles and in an interview with the Financial Times, Jin is a member of the Chinese Communist Party.

The bank’s mission is to finance green infrastructure that prioritises sustainability, innovation and connectivity. It is capitalised at USD 100 billion and Triple-A-rated by S&P Global Ratings, Moody’s Investors Services and Fitch Ratings.

AIIB has growing links to the Pacific. New Zealand is one of AIIB’s founding members and holds 0.48% of the bank’s shares. Other members from the Pacific are Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu. AIIB has co-financed loans to support Cook Islands and Fiji as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.
