Archbishop Sir David Moxon
Thursday, 18 June 2026 7:30pm
Wairarapa
Copthorne Hotel, Masterton (room to be advised)
Archbishop Sir David Moxon is the Archbishop Emeritus of the Anglican Church in New Zealand. Instead of retreating into retirement he is still active in social and cultural issues on behalf of the Anglican Church. However in 2013 he began a four year appointment as the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Representative to the Holy See (the Vatican) and Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome. His role was to foster Anglican-Roman Catholic relations, but he also addressed contemporary challenges such as modern slavery, human trafficking, and care of refugees.
Rome of course is one of the great cities of the Mediterranean and from there Sir David had visibility of the social crises facing both the Church and western societies, as well as the changing international relationships for nations in the region. He will speak of his experience in Rome, to the Wairarapa Branch of the Institute of International Affairs this month.
David Moxon was born and brought up in Palmerston North, where he attended Freyberg high school and Massey University. He has Masters degrees in education from Massey, and in theology from Oxford. He was ordained in the Anglican Church in 1979 and in 1993 was elected as Bishop of Waikato.
As a young priest he married to Tureiti….., whom he met in Havelock North. She is of Ngati Kahungungu.
In 1995, Bishop David represented the Conference of Churches of Aotearoa New Zealand on board HMNZS Tui, as part of the New Zealand government's peaceful protest against the detonation of nuclear bombs at Mururoa Atoll in French Polynesia.
In 2008 he was elected as Archbishop to the pakeha tikanga of the Anglican Church and served in that role until 2012 when he was given notice of his appointment to Rome. His time in Rome included the period in 2014 when Russia first annexed the Crimea from Ukraine, and also Britain’s 2016 referendum in support of ‘Brexit’ from the European Union.
He was knighted in 2015 and, subsequently, in 2024 he was made a Knight of the Order of St John. Still living in Hamilton, he currently serves as the prelate of St John (ambulance) international, and was advanced last year to be Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order of Saint John.
Sir David sits on a number of trusts including the Solomon Islands Medical Mission Trust , and the Ngati Haua Mahi trust for ecological recovery and skills training. He also facilitates Maori church land-related restorative justice challenges.
