The Department of Political Science and International Relations, together with the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs, warmly welcome you to an address by
Ambassador Rosemary Banks, followed by a reception.

Rosemary Banks is currently Chair of the NZ-US Council and Director of the New Zealand Security Sector Professional Development Programme and former Ambassador to the United States (from 2018-2022).

Her forty plus year career in Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade included six previous overseas assignments. She was Ambassador to France and Portugal and Permanent Representative to the OECD (2010-2014) and Permanent Representative at the United Nations in New York (2005-2009). Earlier Rosemary served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Canberra and in Honiara.

Prior to her appointment as Ambassador to the United States, Rosemary was a Crown negotiator for the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process. She was a member of the University of Canterbury Council and continues to hold the position of Senior Adjunct Fellow in the Department of Political Science.

Rosemary has provided diplomatic trade craft training for the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, The Treasury, the New Zealand Defence Force and the Papua New Guinea Department of Foreign Affairs.

She has a Master of Arts degree in Russian with First Class Honours from Canterbury University and a Master of Science from the London School of Economics. The University of Canterbury awarded her an Honorary Doctorate.
