NZIIA National AGM and Annual Lecture

Members are warmly invited to attend the NZIIA National AGM and annual lecture. 

The format is as follows:

  • 4-5pm, AGM including an address by NZIIA Chair Dr Richard Grant and Executive Director Dr Hamish McDougall
  • 5.30pm-6.30pm, Annual lecture and Q and A with Anna Fifield, chaired by Professor David Capie. 
  • 6.30pm - 8pm, drinks and canapes.

The AGM Agenda will be distributed to members by 6 April 2023. The events are free to attend. A donation towards the event costs is optional. 

Members who wish to propose items of business for the agenda, motions or changes to the NZIIA Constitution (if any), should send these in writing to the Executive Director by 5pm (NZT) on 28 March - email nziia@vuw.ac.nz.

The date and location of the AGM have previously been communicated to members; however, this formal notice is within the minimum notification period specified in the Constitution. Accordingly, a motion will be moved at the AGM to proceed under 13.12 of the Constitution, supported by the Chair in their discretion.

There are three Board vacancies in 2023, and seven nominations have been made for these places. An election voted by NZIIA members will shortly commence and voting closes on 6 April 2023. Members will be notified of the Board election results at the AGM. 

Corporate and institutional members should specify in writing who their appointed delegate is for the AGM. This information, notice of attendance at the AGM and forms for proxy voting at the AGM can be received by the Executive Director up to 1 hour before the start of the event.

About Anna Fifield

Anna Fifield is the Asia-Pacific editor for the Washington Post, overseeing the paper's coverage of the region. She has been the Post's bureau chief in Beijing and Tokyo, and previously spent 13 years at the Financial Times, with postings in Seoul, the Middle East and Washington DC. Between 2020 and 2022, she was the editor of the Dominion Post in Wellington. She was a Nieman Journalism Fellow at Harvard University in 2013-14, and in 2018 won Stanford University’s Shorenstein Prize for excellence in reporting on Asia. Her book about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, The Great Successor, was published in 2019 and has been translated into 24 languages.

About Professor David Capie

David Capie is Director of the Centre for Strategic Studies and Professor of International Relations at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington. His research interests focus on conflict and security issues, particularly in the Asia–Pacific region, and New Zealand's foreign and defence policy. He has authored or co-authored three books and numerous articles and book chapters. His research has been supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, the East-West Center and the Royal Society of New Zealand’s Marsden Fund. David has held visiting positions at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University and at LUIS Guido Carli in Rome. He is currently regional co-chair of the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific (CSCAP) and was a member of the ASEAN Regional Forum Experts and Eminent Persons Group from 2012 to 2019.
