H.E. Nina Obermaier is the European Union Ambassador to New Zealand based in Wellington. She started her career as a journalist and then moved into government. She has spent the last 20 years working for the European Union covering Israel, and the West Bank and Gaza, information society and e-government, crisis management and EU negotiations with Switzerland.

Before coming to New Zealand in 2019 Nina Obermaier was the lead negotiator for the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland in the Brexit negotiations.

A key outcome of her posting to New Zealand is the Free Trade Agreement signed between the EU and New Zealand in 2022.

Mrs Obermaier attained an M.A. in European Studies at the College of Europe Natolin, Poland. She also has an M.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Hanover, Germany, and the University of Sussex in the UK.

She speaks four languages; English, German, French and Dutch.
